I am just going to come out and say it, Food Truck food just has too much taste! If you know me, that is the last thing you would think would come out my mouth – or go into it. Food with no taste has been my pet peeve for years, but after eating Mexican this, Korean BBQ that, Dumplings, Chinese Noodles, Halal, and other ethnic based foods, I am just yearning for a simple turkey sandwich on white bread with mayo (not wasabi or chipotle infused).

I guess because of the nature of the this type of food it tends to be stronger tastes. For one the portions are usually smaller than typical food places. They also typically have a smaller menu based around a single type of food, which helps them stand out and be remember but that also encourages bolder tastes. In addition to that, there is a fierce competition for superiority as the food trucks tend to line up next to one another. Couple that fact with a built in Napoleon complex because they aren’t a classic restaurant and you have a “recipe” (sorry for the “tasteless” pun) for food that I would typically enjoy – unapologetically flavorful. I definitely needed a break though, but where do I find it?

Finally this morning I came across a small food truck that had “hot breakfast” written on the front in oversized red block letters. Skeptical, I approached. Typed and printed on a 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper in only black was a menu of breakfast sandwiches, the likes of which I have not consumed since my last hangover before starting the challenge. I promptly ordered a bacon, egg and cheese barely believing that I would actually get it. But, I was not disappointed. I had two freshly fried eggs, with american cheese and crispy bacon on a warm role. I added ketchup, salt and pepper for good measure and headed back to my apartment.

As I ate that sandwich in the privacy of my own home, i realized that it never felt so good to be so plain. Side note. I like how bacon is plain to me now. Bacon has such a strong salty taste normally, but compared to short rib tacos with jalapeno slaw topped with bibimbap, it is actually pretty mild. Anyway, the point is, “You Don’t Know What You Got Til It’s Gone”. Take it away Janet…
