Hey, have you ever eaten shawarma or tacos before? Cool, me too.

I’ve found myself in a similar predicament as Ben during this challenge.  I’m at the point where i’d rather starve myself than eat food from another halal/hot dog/taco vendor.  Lucky for me, 95% of the food trucks in this city fit directly into these categories. Yay! I have found some decent alternatives, though.  I’ve eaten a nice chicken pesto crepe from Craffles in Columbus Circle, had some tasty empanadas from Nuchas Empanadas on Broadway and Prince, and had some fairly decent general Tsaos Chicken from a truck on West 4th near Mercer named Authentic Chinese Food or something clever like that.

This weekend ben and I knocked a couple more boroughs off the list by hitting up Queens and Staten Island.  In Queens we found an authentic Mexican taco cart on Roosevelt and Gleane where we ate tortas and tacos, which did not disappoint.  We had to get a little creative on the staten Island Front.  According to the Internet, Staten Island gets no food truck love, so we put our creativity caps on and decided that the staten island ferry is mobile, and waited till we crossed the staten island border before chowing down on concession style pre-made breakfast biscuit sandwiches. Yums. Side notes – did you know the Staten Island Ferry is free to ride? Also, why do people on boats love waving at other people on other boats?

Something I’ve learned about myself is that I have developed a 6th sense where I can spot a food truck from a quarter mile away and know exactly what kind of truck it’s going to be.  I recognize the colors (usually red and yellow) and lettering (helvetica) and graphics (pictures of falafel and gyros) which results in a sigh of disappointment in realizing that dinner is going to consist of falafels and greasy chicken again.
The good news is I’m 20 meals into the challenge without a slip-up and the finish line is in sight.  That means that Ben and I can finally celebrate by going to Sizzlers. Yes yes y’all!
